Elementary education

Nursery schools ('kleuterschool') cater for children from 2.5 up to and including 5 years of age, primary schools ('lagere school') for children from 6 to 12 years of age. Nursery education and primary education together are known as elementary education ('basisschool').

Brussels boasts more than 130 mainstream nursery or primary schools. The compulsory school age for children in Belgium is five years old (3rd grade of nursery education). 

Dutch-language education in Brussels comes under the remit of the Flemish Community.
