Secondary education
The fulltime secondary education is for adolescents from 12 to 18 years old and is organised in 3 levels of 2 year each.
The first level devotes most of its attention to the basic curriculum. In the A subject, with the most students, most of the classes are shared with all students. The B subject is destined for students with a learning delay, less skilled for mostly theoretical education or consciously choosing vocational training.
As of the second level the student will choose a certain subject in the GSE, TSE, ASE or VSE.
In the general secondary education or GSE (algemeen secundair onderwijs (ASO)) the focus is on a broad general education to lay the groundwork for a higher education.
The technical secondary education or TSE (technisch secundair onderwijs (TSO)) focuses mostly on general and technical theoretical courses. After the TSE the adolescent can choose a profession or go on to study in the higher education system.
The artistic secondary education or ASE (kunstsecundair onderwijs (KSO)) provides a general broad education linked to actively practicing arts. After the ASE the adolescent can choose a profession or go on to study in the higher education system.
The vocational secondary education or VSE (beroepssecundair onderwijs (BSO)) is a practical form of education where the adolescent is taught a specific profession, while also benefiting from the general education.
In addition to the fulltime education there is a number of systems where the adolescent can combine part-time learning and part-time working.
Brussels has over thirty Dutch speaking schools for fulltime secondary education, together offering more than eighty main subjects. Brussels also has five schools for special secondary education, and three schools for part-time education.
